My Message

From Thursday November 15th Through to December 24th 2018 Sandra Topper & Roland Topper the Owners of Bespoke Aromatics will be donating 10% of net sales in honour of our Family's SickKids Ambassador to the Hospital's highest priority needs.  We are also encouraging our friends and customers to become supporters of SickKids with additional donations which can either be done through this page or by dropping off a donation at our retail location in Downtown Cobourg Ontario.

We have called upon our family, friends and neighbours to help us support SickKids for many years.

WE ARE AT IT AGAIN - WHY?

Because we have a tenacious red haired girl in our family whom we adore and we are forever grateful for the care that she has received and will continue to receive at The Hospital for Sick Children until she transitions into adulthood.

When Nevaeh was born in 2006, we were told that lots of babies are born with clubbed-feet and that there was nothing else to worry about.

The typical method for treating clubbed feet usually takes 12-18 months, however in Nevaeh’s case, it took several years of serial casting, tendon and muscle transfer surgeries on both feet and finally a bone resection surgery on her left to further maintain stability. Nevaeh’s feet remain problematic and sometime during her teenage years she will need further surgery.

We had a hard time believing that there was nothing else to worry about, especially since Nevaeh presented with several other quirky features, which finally resulted in referrals to several other specialists at The Hospital for Sick Children. In the spring of 2010 we received a call from the genetics department at SickKids, our hunches were confirmed; Nevaeh was diagnosed with Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) a rare genetic condition.

Some genetic conditions are passed on from a parent, however Nevaeh’s genome sequencing revealed a de-novo mutation or random-mutation whereby the individual is the first in their family to have the mutation.

Nevaeh’s condition affects all of her connective tissue, the matrix that provides elasticity and tone to skin, bone, tendons, muscle and in particular to arteries. Individuals with these types of connective tissue disorders may experience fragility of the arteries resulting in tears and spontaneous rupturing and in particular, the aortic root is one of the weakest links.

In the general population the dimension of a persons aortic root is about 2.5 to 3.2 centimetres and typically remains this size for a person’s life span.  However, at the age of 4 years Nevaeh’s aortic root was already was measuring 3.5 centimetres.  In 2016 during a rapid growth-spurt Nevaeh’s aortic root ballooned to 4.5 centimetres and so she underwent a valve sparing aortic root graft in order to maintain the integrity of the aorta and prevent an aortic dissection.  Going forward Nevaeh will continue to be monitored by her cardiologist with routine echo-cardiograms and vascular MRI’s to watch for other potential aneurysms.

Because this condition also causes poor bone density, early onset osteoarthritis, scoliosis, poor muscle tone, gastrointestinal problems and respiratory issues, apart from Cardiology Nevaeh is also followed in several departments namely; Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Complex Spine, Respirology and Dentistry.

Our family has encouraged Nevaeh to take ownership of the potential hardships that she is going to face with respect to her health and she is beginning to accept her limitations, by focusing and building upon her abilities. Today she is a thriving 11 eleven year old with interests in reading, art, dance, drama and theatre.

Our entire family and everyone who knows Nevaeh is in awe of her feisty personality. Heaven sent us an archangel who overflows with optimism and confidence. Oh sure, there are plenty of platitudes, but if there is one thing that we are certain about, hardship has nothing to do with ‘building’ character, but rather ‘revealing’ it.

On behalf of our family - as well as thousands of other families - we are grateful to each and every donor - because without donations, SickKids would never have become, nor will continue to be, a world leader in child health care and research.

Sincerely,
Sandra & Roland Topper & Leanne Hudson
