My Message

The Fighting Eagle Tournament was created to remember Alex, his spirit, laughter and love of hockey, and to raise funds to support SickKids in their quest to find a cure for cancer. Alex was diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma in 2012. Throughout 2012 and into 2013, he underwent treatments of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, all while going to school and playing hockey. Alex’s journey captured everyone’s heart because of his determination to continue to play the game he loved with his teammates. Alex passed away in April of 2013, but his story continues with the Fighting Eagle Tournament.

This year we are supporting SickKids Cancer Sequencing Program:
In 2016, SickKids established the Kids Cancer Sequencing Program (KiCS). This was an opportunity to take advantage of our genetic expertise to improve outcomes for kids with relapsed or hard-to-treat cancers. SickKids analyses the genetic make-up of a child’s cancer. Using this information specific to a patient’s cancer, treatment options can be identified. Early results show that over 50% of those children with hard-to-treat cancers will have a change in their diagnosis or treatment. This program allows SickKids to offer new treatments to patients. Partnering with other hospitals across Canada, we then match all the sequencing information gathered by SickKids with potentially life-saving drugs. With the support of our donors, SickKids can continue to offer improved treatments and new hope to patients and their families who are in desperate need of better options.

Alex and I were inseparable as kids. We would walk around our yard at recess just talking the whole time every day, every week. I knew that Alex was a special kid since I was 5. He was so thoughtful and genuine and he was just a kid. I lost him nearly 7 years ago but his influence on me is eternal, he showed me how to act when your buddy was having a rough day as well as how to pump them up when they do something great. This tournament is so meaningful to me because not only is it for an amazing person and cause but it reminds us of who Alex was as a person and we should never ever forget him. I know that Alex would be raising more than anyone else for this tournament because that is just who he was. He had a heart the size of Russia and you knew you had a good friend when you were with him.

Even if you cannot donate, thank you for reading.
